Old Fashion Cream Peas and Potatoes

CATEGORY: Side Dish - Vegetables
For many of us growing up, this dish was a Sunday staple...And it's still as good as it use to be!
PREP TIME: 10 minutes
COOK TIME:  15 minutes
4 medium red new potatoes, cubed
1 (10 ounce) package frozen peas
1 teaspoon sugar
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground pepper or 1/2 teaspoon white pepper
1-1/2 cups milk
2 tablespoons minced fresh dill
  1. In a medium size saucepan, place cubed potatoes and cover with water. Over high heat, bring water to a boil, then reduce to medium heat and cook potatoes until tender.
  2. Cook peas according to package directions.
  3. Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat: add flour, salt and pepper to form a paste.  Stir in milk, gradually.  Continue stirring while bringing mixture to a boil.  Let boil for 1 minute.  Stir dill into the mixture and continue cooking until thickened and bubbly.
  4. Drain peas and potatoes.  Place peas in serving bowl; add sugar and stir.  Add potatoes to serving bowl.  Pour sauce over peas and potatoes and stir to coat.  Ready to serve!
