Preheat oven to 400 degrees
Combine cranberries, cinnamon stick and water in a small saucepan and simmer for approx 10 minutes. Drain and remove the cinnamon stick.
In a small bowl, with pastry cutter, blend flour, brown sugar, salt, and butter until the mixture resembles coarse meal.
Peel, core, and thinly slice apples, toss them with the cranberries and place in a buttered 9- by 13-inch glass dish.
Sprinkle the brown sugar mixture over the fruit and bake for 25 minutes, or until the apples are fork tender and the topping is golden.
