Molassess Ginger Cookies

These cookies are sweet and chewy.  Perfect for an ice cream sandwich!
PREP TIME: 30 minutes
2 cups all purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger
1 teaspoon salt
1 stick unsalted butter, softened to room temp
1/4 cup Crisco, room temperature
1 cup (packed) dark brown sugar
1 egg  
1/4 cup light molasses
1 tablespoon grated orange peel
1/2 cup granulated sugar

Sift flour, baking soda, cloves, cinnamon, ginger and salt into medium bowl. Combine butter, shortening and brown sugar in large bowl. Beat butter mixture until fluffy with electric mixer. Add egg, molasses and orange peel; beat until blended. Add dry ingredients; mix just until incorporated- be careful not to over-mix. Cover; chill 1 1/2 hours.

Preheat oven to 350°F.
Butter 2 baking sheets. Place 1/2 cup granulated sugar in small bowl. Using wet hands, shape dough into 12 balls. Roll balls in sugar to coat. Transfer to prepared sheets, spacing 2 1/2 inches apart. Bake until cookies are pale golden and cracked on top but still soft, about 15 minutes. Cool on sheets 1 to 2 minutes. Transfer to racks; cool completely.
