Chopped

A 'Foodie Challenge' Party

On September 8, 2009 the first episode of 'Chopped' aired on the Food Network.  This phenom pits four professional chefs, armed with baskets of secret ingredients, against one another and a timer.  It has grown from a 'Chopped Champions Event' in the first year, to a 'Grand Finale' (with a $50,000.00 cash prize) in the second year.  In 2011 we saw an 'All-Stars Tournament', with the winner donating his/her earnings to a charity of their choice.  The winner, Nate Applemen donated his $50K winnings to the Kawasaki Disease Foundation 'Chopped' has become so popular that teens everywhere have jumped on board and are hosting their own 'Chopped Quick Fry' parties ...Creating "up and coming" chefs for the future.... we're sure!

Invitations:

We like this invitation! You select 4 guests to be 'the judges', add some audience members (optional) and invite 4 guests to be 'the chefs' (request that each 'chef' invite his/her own sous chef). Let the guests know what their 'Chopped' role will be.  Include a link to a 'Chopped' episode to prepare everyone for the fun!!

Scene:

Set up 4 cooking stations with an open pantry, utilizing a Portable Shelving Unit (we can all use extra shelves- great for the garage after the party).  Make sure you have plenty of Cooking Utensils on hand.

An herb poster on the wall to inspire the chefs.

The Judges Table; draped in white linen and Square White Dinnerware for plating.

The perfect appetizer plate!

Activities:

A 'CHOPPED' Event- Not many of us have commercial kitchens so Party Saviors has come up with our own version of 'CHOPPED'. This cooking challenge is divided into three rounds: Appetizer, Entree and Dessert.  In each round, the chefs (supported by their sous chefs) are given identical baskets, containing 3-5 ingredients (the ingredient selections should include items that are not typically prepared together- be sure to include an un-named 'mystery spice').  Instruct the chefs to create a dish that includes every item in their basket. The chef's will also be given access to any item found in the pantry and fridge.  Each round is timed: 20 minutes for the appetizer, 35 minutes for both the entree and dessert rounds.  The teams must prepare their dishes and complete 4 platings before the time runs out.  After each round the judges will vote on presentation and taste, then determine which team will be 'chopped' (allow the audience to have tastes, as well!).  Continue with the rounds until only one team (the winner!) remains.  To avoid the 'chef teams' from competing for stovetop and oven space, give each team an identical small cooking appliance, such as an electric fry pan, toaster oven or panini grill (time to call on friends for loaners!!)  Be sure to video the chefs in action!!

Winners: (Determined by the judges)

  • Best Over-All Chef
  • Best Appetizer
  • Best Entree
  • Best Dessert

Name That Spice- After all the tastings; ask your guests to guess the names of the 'Mystery Spices' that the chef teams used in their dishes.  The guest with the most correct answers wins a prize!!

Favors:

Chef's apron with personalized embroidery for each Chef and Sous Chef

Chef's Hats for the Judges and Audience

Prizes:

$10,000.00 and A DVD of the party's cooking event- Winning Team
